Parent training for ADHD: a calmer home, a more confident you.

Parent training for ADHD teaches you specific, research-based ways to respond to your child: praise that actually changes behaviour, instructions that get followed, and consequences that stay calm. It is the first-line treatment for young children with ADHD, and it helps school-age children and teens too.

What It Is

What is parent training for ADHD?

Behavioural parent training is a structured, short-term programme in which a psychologist teaches parents specific skills to manage ADHD-related behaviour, then coaches them as they practise at home. Paediatric guidelines, including those of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the US CDC, recommend it as the first treatment for children under six with ADHD, and alongside other treatment for school-age children. It does not mean you have been parenting badly. ADHD simply needs a more deliberate approach than most children do.

What You Learn

Six skills parent training teaches.

🌟Attention

Praise that works

Specific, immediate praise for the behaviour you want ("you started your homework on your own"), and special one-to-one time that strengthens your relationship.

🗣️Instructions

Instructions that get followed

Get close, make eye contact, give one short instruction, and wait. Fewer words and fewer repeats mean better follow-through.

🏆Rewards

Reward systems that do not fizzle

Small, frequent, immediate rewards tied to two or three clear goals, changed regularly so your child stays interested.

⚖️Consequences

Calm, predictable consequences

Planned ignoring of minor attention-seeking, brief time-outs or loss of a privilege for serious behaviour, delivered without shouting.

🗓️Structure

Routines that run themselves

Visual schedules for mornings, homework and bedtime, so the routine does the reminding instead of you.

🏫School

Linking home and school

Simple tools such as a daily report card with the teacher, so good behaviour at school is noticed and rewarded at home.

In The Moment

How to calm a child with ADHD.

Calm yourself first: your nervous system sets the tone for theirs. Then use fewer words and a lower voice, make the space safe, and offer movement or a quiet corner. Name the feeling ("you are really frustrated that the game ended"). Leave problem-solving and consequences until everyone has settled.

Day To Day

How to discipline a child with ADHD.

Discipline works best when it is mostly about teaching, not punishing. Catch your child doing well several times a day, set two or three clear house rules, and use small rewards and brief, predictable consequences. Long lectures, shouting and taking away everything at once usually backfire with ADHD, because the link between action and consequence gets lost.

At Coach For Mind

Our parent training programme.

Our programme draws on the same behavioural principles as well-researched programmes such as Triple P, Incredible Years and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, adapted for Indian family life: joint families, grandparents who help with care, school pressure and long commutes.

It usually runs for 8 to 12 weekly sessions, online from anywhere in India or in person at our clinic in Sector 70, Gurugram. Many families combine it with direct sessions for their child. See ADHD therapy for children and ADHD treatment in Gurgaon.

Your first session

  1. A typical day, in detail: where things go smoothly and where they break down.
  2. What you have tried, and what happened.
  3. Two or three target behaviours to start with, chosen together.
  4. One strategy to practise this week, usually special time and specific praise, because everything else builds on them.

Questions

Parent training for ADHD: common questions.

What is the best parent training for ADHD?
The best-supported option is behavioural parent training: structured sessions that teach parents specific skills such as targeted praise, clear instructions, consistent rewards and calm consequences. Well-researched programmes built on these principles include Triple P, Incredible Years and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. What matters most is that the programme is behavioural, skills-based and includes practice at home with feedback.
What are the 5 C's of ADHD parenting?
The 5 C's, described by psychologist Sharon Saline, are self-Control (staying calm yourself), Compassion, Collaboration (solving problems with your child rather than for them), Consistency, and Celebration (noticing what goes well). They are a helpful summary of the attitudes that make parent training strategies work.
How do you discipline a child with ADHD?
Focus first on noticing and praising the behaviour you want. Give one short, clear instruction at a time. Use small, immediate rewards rather than distant ones, ignore minor attention-seeking behaviour where it is safe to, and keep consequences brief, calm and predictable. Shouting, long lectures and harsh punishments usually make things worse.
How do I calm a child with ADHD during a meltdown?
Calm yourself first, then use fewer words and a lower voice. Make the space safe, offer movement or a quiet corner, and name the feeling ("you are really frustrated"). Save problem-solving and consequences for later, once everyone is calm.
Is there free online parent training for ADHD?
There are good free resources, such as the parenting materials from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and CHADD. They are useful for learning the principles. Structured parent training with a psychologist adds personalised planning, practice and feedback, which is usually what makes the strategies stick.
Does parent training work for teenagers with ADHD?
Yes, with changes. For teenagers the focus shifts from rewards and time-outs to negotiation, agreed house rules, problem-solving together and supporting independence. Teens usually also benefit from their own sessions. See our page on ADHD therapy for children and teens.
Do both parents need to attend parent training?
It helps a lot. Children with ADHD do best when adults respond in the same way, so we encourage both parents, and other key caregivers such as grandparents, to attend at least some sessions. Online sessions make this easier for busy families.
