What Is Counselling for Parents of LGBTQ Children?

It is counselling for parents and family members after a child comes out, with a queer-affirmative therapist who understands both your child's experience and Indian family life. You get a private space to say what you're really feeling, ask the questions you can't ask anyone else, and get accurate information. The aim is to help you stay connected to your child while you work through your own reactions.

Many parents feel they have to choose between their love for their child and their worries about the future, family honour, religion or what relatives will say. You don't have to resolve all of that at once. Most parents' feelings shift a great deal with time and the right support.

Is This You?

  • Your son or daughter has just told you, and you don't know what to say next.
  • You keep wondering what you did wrong, or whether it's a phase.
  • You're worried about marriage, grandchildren, or what people will say.
  • You and your spouse are reacting very differently, and it's causing arguments.
  • You love your child but feel distant from them right now.
  • You suspect your child might be gay or trans and want to know how to make it safe for them to talk.

What We Help Parents With

  • Shock, grief and guilt — working through feelings that are hard to admit, without judgement.
  • Accurate information — what being gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans or queer does and doesn't mean, and what Indian psychiatry says.
  • Talking with your child — what to say, what not to say, and how to repair a first reaction you regret.
  • Parents who disagree — when one parent is more accepting than the other.
  • Relatives, community and marriage enquiries — handling questions without outing your child.
  • Religious and cultural concerns — making space for your values alongside your relationship with your child.
  • Parents of trans and non-binary children — understanding gender identity and supporting your child. See trans and non-binary affirmative therapy.
  • Family sessions — when everyone is ready, a space to understand each other and rebuild trust.

What Parents Should Know

Being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is not a mental illness and is not caused by parenting. The Indian Psychiatric Society said in 2018 that homosexuality is not a mental illness, the Supreme Court decriminalised same-sex relationships the same year, and India's National Medical Commission treats conversion therapy as professional misconduct for doctors. Research consistently shows that family acceptance is one of the strongest protections for an LGBTQ young person's mental health.

Support for Your Child Too

Your child may also benefit from their own space. We offer queer-affirmative therapy for young adults, teen therapy for questioning teenagers with parental consent, and coming-out support. A child's sessions are confidential, within the usual safety limits, so they can speak freely.

Online Across India, or In Person in Gurgaon

Parents can see us over secure video from anywhere in India or abroad, together or separately, or in person at our centre in Sector 70, Gurgaon. Sessions are available in English, Hindi and Punjabi.

In NCR, see LGBTQ+ therapy in Gurgaon and Delhi NCR.

What Your First Session Looks Like

  1. Free discovery call — message us on WhatsApp. Tell us a little about what's happened and whether one or both parents would like to come.
  2. Your first session (50 minutes) — you talk about what you're feeling and what worries you most. Nothing you say will be repeated to your child.
  3. A plan you understand — your therapist suggests next steps, which may include a few parent sessions and, later, a family session.
  4. You decide — there's no obligation to continue, and you can ask to switch therapists if the fit isn't right.

Please Read: What We Don't Offer, and Emergencies

We do not offer, and will never offer, any attempt to change a child's sexual orientation or gender identity. We also do not provide assessments or letters for hormone therapy (HRT) or gender-affirming surgery.

Therapy is not an emergency service. If your child is in danger or talking about harming themselves, call 112. For support, call iCall: 9152987821 or the Vandrevala Foundation (24/7): 1860-2662-345.
