Why Untreated BPD Keeps Ruining Relationships, Careers, and Self-esteem

Everybody has an image in other’s eyes. And what makes each person different from the other is their personality; their identity. When your personality has deviations so far off from what is appropriate and has patterns of behaviour that is making your functioning in life impaired, there comes the possibility of personality disorders.

Among the various personality disorders, classified into three clusters, borderline personality disorder is one among the most common personality disorders. There are clinics and professionals providing specialized borderline personality disorder treatment in India. But, ever wondered if they are so common, then how come you rarely hear about personality disorders as a mental health condition? Especially as compared to disorders like depression, various anxiety disorders, or even dramatic psychosis like schizophrenia and Dissociative Identity Disorder?

It is because diagnosis of personality disorders, including Borderline Personality Disorder is often difficult even by a best BPD therapist in India.

Why ‘Borderline’ Personality Disorder? Is their personality on the border of something?

It is an interesting question. Why borderline personality disorder is called so?

The answer goes back to the history of BPD. Back in the days, when mental health issues were slowly gaining needed attention, they were understood under two categories: neurosis and psychosis.

What we now recognise as BPD was once thought to be a milder form of schizophrenia; something that is on the ‘border’ between neurosis and psychosis. Hence ‘borderline’.

A little piece of knowledge: The term, ‘Borderline group’ was first used by an American psychoanalyst, Adolf Stern in 1938.

Now, borderline personality disorder is used to mean a persistent behavioural pattern or personality characterised by chronic instability in emotions, mood, self-image, and relationships. Hence, it is also referred to as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD). Anger outbursts, non suicidal self-harm, impulsive and risky behaviours, irritability, etc are also often a part of this.

What exactly is BPD? Let’s learn it through a case.

Shilpa, a 28 year old accountant working at an established organisation was brought to the psychologist by her friend. The major reason being she frequently uses self-harm. But has never actually attempted suicide or cut her in ways that are serious. Whenever she has a fight with someone, especially her parents and partner, she engages in self-harm. Often calls them and lets them know what she is doing, leading to them getting scared and trying to console and coddle her. She quickly calms down after that.

On further interviewing with Shilpa, the friend, and family, it’s found that she has always been volatile and impulsive like that. She often has these extreme mood swings, explosive anger, and sometimes silent and forlorn days. She loves just as fiercely as well. But her relationships are usually very intense, and often, brief. Most of the time, she causes issues and then clings on in fear of being abandoned. Her parents have had to frequently fight with her on her impulsive and reckless behaviours like quitting jobs abruptly, driving under influence, etc but often gives up at the end because of her threats to herself.

The friend who brought her had awareness about personality disorders and BPD treatment in India. Like she suspected, the psychologist diagnosed Shilpa with Borderline personality disorder and further treatment and management procedures were started.

In the above case, there are two important things that a layman might miss;

  • Shilpa was exhibiting severe and clear cut symptoms of BPD. But this is not always the case, and it is often difficult to understand subtle symptoms and assign diagnosis for borderline personality disorder treatment in India. A best BPD therapist in India can accurately understand underlying issues and do proper diagnosis of the symptoms.
  • The client lived 28 years of her life without a diagnosis or proper treatment. Early diagnosis and timely intervention through BPD treatment in India could help improve overall functioning and mental health of the patient a lot. It was only because of the awareness that friend had and her willingness to act on it, that helped Shilpa. Even when neither her, her parents, nor partners realized it.

Because of the untreated condition, that girl suffered for almost 3 decades. Years of self-doubt, emotional instability and distress, relationship problems, unstable career, and an overall life of living on the edge in fear, anger, doubts, and confusions. Things that a best bpd therapist could have helped greatly through proper diagnosis and BPD treatment in India

Think about how many people might be struggling without even knowing the real problem.

If the problem is in personality, does that mean it cannot be cured?

Since BPD is a personality disorder, it may not be ‘cured’ in the traditional sense, but it can be effectively managed with the right treatment.Through various specifically designed psychotherapies, the symptoms and behaviour can be managed so that the person can have improved functioning and better quality of life. So, through borderline personality disorder treatment in India, BPD is a highly treatable or manageable condition.

One of the major treatment techniques for borderline personality disorder treatment in India is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) developed by Marsha Linehan. Other techniques a best bpd therapist in India would use for management of BPD include:

  • Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT)
  • Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Schema Therapy
  • Anger Management

Medications are also used for treating certain co-occuring conditions like depression, anxiety, etc.

Don’t let your problems go unnoticed and untreated. Don’t let them take over your life. Seek the best bpd treatment in India so you can be better. So you can live better.
