WHAT IS MIND COACHING?

This concept is vastly different from career coaching, which stops at helping one decide what career path they want to pursue. Rather, mind coaching focuses on providing the client with a companion who can help them develop the skills and mindset required to prepare for the qualifying examinations that they wish to clear, such as those of IIT, IIM, civil services and so on. This would be done in a group session format.

WHAT ARE GROUP SESSIONS?

Group sessions are essentially therapeutic sessions that take place between several people and one or more trained mind coaches at once. The said group of participants often have some commonality in terms of the reason why they are coming for sessions, the exam that they are preparing for, age, gender, and so on. The size of the group can range from 5 to 7 participants.

Irvin D. Yalom proposed the following principles of group sessions:-

1. Instilling hope: One common fear experienced by students is that they might be the only ones struggling to perform well in exams. But since the therapy group would consist of students from various backgrounds who’d all be working hard in order to get better marks, they would be able to learn from each other’s struggles as well. Additionally, the judgment-free environment provided in group therapy also helps students voice their concerns and work on finding solutions for the same.

2. Imparting information: The information that comes up in conversations during group therapy sessions itself can be of great help for students because it can help them learn from each other.

3. Altruism: As group therapy progresses, the students would start to look out for each other. This would reduce the dependence of the students on the moderator or the psychotherapist and lead to a rise in their self-esteem as well.

4. A corrective experience: A therapy group can often turn into a place where students can learn to let go of maladaptive behaviors and coping mechanisms, such as procrastinating when they are exposed to stress and learn healthier ways of dealing with academic pressures instead.

5. Social skills training and modeling: Since such a therapy group is a microcosm of the society at large, it can help students develop better social skills through interactions happening within the group which they can use for their own benefit in interviews and educational institutions.

6. Universality: Being amongst people fighting similar battles can help the members of group sessions feel that they are not alone after all.

7. Catharsis: The simple act of sharing in itself can relieve group members of a lot of distress that can be caused by the pressures faced by a student in the current educational system.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

In these mind coaching sessions, groups of 5-7 aspirants will be created. The sessions will primarily comprise of discussions in which the mind coach will play the role of a moderator. The aim of the discussions would be to understand the experiences of fellow group members with regard to preparing for the exam and mutually developing the skill set required to work towards your aim.

WHO IS THE MODERATOR?

Mr. Lekh Bajaj completed his BTech from IIT Delhi before pursuing a master’s level degree in Clinical Psychology. He has worked with clients of all ages from various economic, academic and cultural backgrounds, with a wide range of difficulties such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and relationship issues.
