Grief Counseling India

Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable, can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.

Fred Rogers

What is Grief?

When someone very close to us passes away, the emotions one feels can be difficult to understand and comprehend. Feelings of loss, sorrow, pain and loneliness can engulf a person. Grief is the complex combination of those emotions that is expressed through grief in the form of various symptoms such as –

  • Physiological distress
  • Anxiety and its forms (eg. separation anxiety)
  • Rumination of the past
  • Tension and anxiety about the future
  • Sorrow
  • Confusion
  • Longing and yearning, etc.

Feeling the need to talk to someone or look for a safe space to share your emotions are healthy ways to go through grief. However, when you feel like not meeting anyone, staying inside your room for long hours or days, and not eating or sleeping well – can impact your mental and physical well-being negatively. This is when seeking grief counseling can help you manage those negative emotions while sharing your troubles without any judgment.

What is Grief Counseling?

Grief counseling is a form of counseling that deals with helping clients cope with the loss of their loved ones, friends, family, or anyone whose loss has impacted them very deeply.

It is also known as bereavement counseling and allows the clients to identify their emotions, manage their mental states, and foster a healthy routine that may have been disrupted due to the impact of the loss on the client. Clients are encouraged not to suppress any emotions and are also equipped with tools to help cope when those emotions get too heavy.

Types of Grief Counseling India

Grief counseling in India can take various forms depending on the kind of grief experienced by the client. The following are the most common types –

  • Grief Therapy: this revolves around being emotionally stronger during times of loss and bereavement while trying to be hopeful for your future. Clients are helped to feel loved and strong again after the devastating effects of the loss.

  • Complicated Grief Therapy: complicated grief refers to the grief that stays with the client for unhealthy amounts of time. The effects of such kind of grief are much more strong and difficult to overcome as the negative emotions settle into the client’s mind. In CGT, counselors enable the clients with techniques to overcome the emotions and the heaviness they are still carrying while helping them re-adapt to their lives in the absence of their loved ones.

  • Traumatic Grief Therapy: some losses leave traumatic scars on clients who find it almost impossible to move on. Traumatic Grief Therapists slowly enable the clients to process the emotions and feelings that have left such a deep mark on them, while helping them come back to a state of balance.

Techniques used in Grief Counseling India

Numerous techniques are used in the entire process of grief counseling. Coming out of grief is a time-consuming process that needs to be handled with care and empathy. Every client experiences grief and process loss in different ways. Hence, different techniques are used in grief counseling in India as per the individual requirements of the client.

  • Individual vs Group Therapy: while some clients feel more comfortable sharing their emotions, experiences, and pain alone, some clients feel more supported and heard in a group. Hence, grief therapy can happen on a one-on-one basis as well as in the form of support groups and group therapy in small groups of 5 to 6 clients.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): in ACT, the client is encouraged to be mindful and be in the present moment by accepting the experience, emotions, and feelings the way they are presenting themselves, without judgment, and working towards the future.

  • Art Therapy: Art therapy is extremely useful in grief counseling as clients can express their loss, pain, and emotions through art forms rather can indulging in harmful behaviors. The analysis of their art pieces also helps understand any unconscious or hidden emotions that they have not been able to express. Art also helps the clients calm their minds and come back to the present moment.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, and other forms of therapy are also highly effective in helping clients process their emotions and build healthier coping mechanisms and adjustment techniques.
